Oxidative stress & The heart
Oxidative stress is the imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants. Free radicals cause damage all over the body! Free radical counts can heighten because of many factors, including age, lifestyle, diet etc. Oxidative stress is a vital player in the development of heart failure. Free radicals such as reactive oxygen species and nitrogen species can be produced in every cell type that is found in the cardiac muscle. In high amounts these reactive species can cause severe damage to the circulatory system as well as cardiac muscle remodeling. Although in excessive amounts these reactive species can be incredibly harmful, a healthy balance is also needed. These species in acceptable amounts regulate many cell functions in the heart, that are ital for heart health. Like in many areas of life balance is required!
